Prestonwood Christian Academy's award-winning visual art department is a dynamic and active part of the Fine Arts at PCA. As students develop their creative skills, they also learn to appreciate the Creator of the universe. PCA's incredible dedicated art faculty is talented with a passion for sharing their skill set and love for visual art with their students, all while modeling a Christ-like lifestyle and attitude toward their students.
Students in PreK-3 through First Grade explore a variety of different media and are encouraged to explore their creativity freely. Basic skills and art vocabulary are used to begin building a foundation for further study. Second through Fourth Grade students increase their technical skills and begin a more in-depth study of art and design principles, such as color theory and form. Drawing from observation, a variety of painting media and collage are emphasized. Lower School art students participate annually in the ACSI art festival as well as the North Campus Fine Arts night.
In Fifth and Sixth Grade, students are introduced to even more art techniques and tools and have a larger focus on 3D sculptural works. Moving into Seventh and Eighth Grade, students learn basic color theory and compositional elements as well as the building blocks to any successful work of art. An emphasis in critical analysis is stressed along with peer critique as the students progress through the semester. The students learn value, spacing, and form while being introduced to a wide array of new materials and media. The Middle School art department also competes in ACSI every year as well as participating in various events throughout the year in which artwork is displayed for the student body and parents.

Monica McKinney has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in K–12 Art Education from the University of North Texas and over a decade of experience teaching students across all grade levels. She has taught in both public and private school settings, art studios, led various summer art camps. She also served in youth ministry, where she developed a special love for students and their unique blend of curiosity, energy, and independence.
She believes deeply in the power that Fine Arts has to point students back to their Creator and to inspire them to pursue what is true, good, and beautiful. As an art teacher, Mrs. McKinney sees her classroom at PCA North as a gift to not only connect with students, but also to provide a place to explore art through a Christian worldview. Whether in the classroom or the community, Mrs. McKinney is dedicated to equipping the next generation of artists to create with both excellence and purpose.
Mrs. McKinney is married to her husband, Andrew, who serves as the worship director at their church and works with The Worship Initiative. They live in Prosper with their three children—Eleanor, Beck, and Max. Outside of the classroom, she can usually be found at the dance studio or baseball fields with her kids, traveling with her family, or enjoying the outdoors—especially the mountains. In the rare moments of quiet, she loves to draw, paint, and create.
Robin Joyce has been teaching for about 17 years, in both public school and private schools. She has a passion for the Lord and helping children achieve things they didn’t know they could do.
She has taught fourth and fifth grade combo, elementary art, and junior high art. She loves teaching art as she majored in art in college. After receiving a Fine Arts degree in Art, she received a teaching credential and a masters degree from Concordia University.
She is also a very talented artist and has had her artwork shown in a local gallery in Colorado when she lived there a few years ago.
In 2020, she moved here to Texas, where she lives with her two boys and her husband. She loves to teach children, go to church, cheer on her two boys in baseball, and ride horses in her free time.
Robin is described to be witty and funny, but also has a warm and caring heart for others. She is looking forward to meeting new students and is excited to be part of this wonderful school.
My favorite thing about PCA is the well-rounded approach that emphasizes the importance of each area of the school - from academics to bible to athletics to the fine arts. PCA North Campus parent
